K-Drama Reaction: Fight My Way | Episode 1

Were you also full of dreams and aspirations when you were younger? Only to be bitten by the harsh reality that it’s not as simple and easy to achieve as you first thought it would? If you do, then this youth drama is the perfect one for you.

The Underdogs

In this pilot episode, we got to know our four ‘unlucky’ friends who are stuck up in jobs that are way far from what they have originally dreamed of. First is Go Dong-man (Park Seo-joon) who was a taekwondo prodigy in his high school. He was a pretty skilled fighter in his heyday: knocking down his opponent with his impressive high kicks and maneuvers. In his 20s, Dong-man is a doctor — of mites (OUCH) or to put it simply a pest exterminator. During a conversation with his former coach, Hwang Jang-ho (Kim Sung-oh), it seems like our Dong-man called it quits after an earlier traumatic incident that is haunting him up to the present.

Second is our aspiring news anchor, Choi Ae-ra (Kim Ji-won). She’s been friends with Dong-man and Baek Seol-hee (Song Ha-yoon) for 20 years. In her 20s, Ae-ra is a department store employee who works at the information desk. Ae-ra was definitely not the brightest in her class in high school, but she’s definitely passionate about becoming a news presenter.

Next is Seol-hee who has the simplest dream — to be a housewife which again is not the case in her 20s.  Currently, she is working as a customer service representative in a home TV shopping company where her boyfriend and the final member of the circle, Kim Joo-man (Ahn Jae-hong) also works at. Joo-man is considered the ‘genius’ of them all and is working as a buyer for the network.

Dong-man and Ae-ra’s Friendship

One of the things I like about this show is the friendship between Dong-man and Ae-ra. It seems that these two, despite their constant bickerings, really care for one another and will help each other out whenever the situation calls for it. However, it seems like Ae-ra has had a crush him even when they were younger as we saw her threw a fit when Dong-man asked his classmate, Jang Bo-ram (Jin Ji-hee) to be his girlfriend.

It’s also been revealed that one of the main reasons Ae-ra is stuck with her current job is because she’s supporting her dumb law student boyfriend, Kim Moo-ki (Kwak Dong-yeon) who always failed to pass the bar exam. Why are there so many drama heroines supporting their beaus in dramaland? Is it a trend in South Korea?

Well, if it’s not infuriating enough, Ae-ra soon discovered that Moo-ki was having an affair with the ahjumma-owner of a restaurant (cameo by Jung So-young). Ae-ra broke down in tears as she explained how hard it was to set aside her dreams to support him despite her low-paying job.

Accidentally learning about Ae-ra’s heartbreak, Dong-man tried to comfort her by buying her a canvas bag which Ae-ra promised to bring with her until the day she dies. Heh.

Parade of Cameos

Aside from Kwak Dong-yeon, Jin Ji-hee and Jung So-young, there were a lot more stars who made a memorable appearance in this pilot episode. First is Choi Woo-shik who played the role of Park Moo-bin. He is Dong-man and Joo-man’s nerdy classmate and he harbours a crush on Bo-ram. I have a feeling though that his character will play a vital role in the lives of our leads in the future.

Second is Hwang Bo-ra who played Ae-ra’s former classmate, Chan-sook. The two seems to fall under  the category of frenemies as it was evident in their unexpected reunion where they tried to attack each other’s weaknesses. The restaurant scene where Ae-ra asked Dong-man to pat her hair to make Chan-sook envious only for it to go totally wrong was really hilarious.

Lee Chae-eun also made a short appearance as the lady who was on a date with Dong-man and who was completely turned off by his unimpressive background.
