As you may have noticed in previous episodes, this K-Drama drunkard noona is a low-key fan of the spunky Hwa-gun (Yoon So-hee), though I’m still not sure if I’m proud of it haha. Let’s take a peek at Ruler: Master of the Mask Episodes 13-14 through the choices she made in helping Crown Prince Lee Sun (Yoo Seung-ho).
Of Copper and Roses
After finding out that Pyunsoo-hwe is behind the trafficking of copper by disguising it as pirate menace, Crown Prince Lee Sun and the gang were successful in entraping the cunning group. But what really striked me in this episode was Hwa-gun’s actions.
She decided to help the crown prince in seizing the copper from Pyunsoo-hwe, but also ordered Gon (Kim Seo-kyung) to save her father (Kim Byung-chul).
Hwa-gun even cut herself with a sword to make it appear that she tried to stop them, when in reality, she provided her father with a horse to escape.
Hwa-gun’s Dilemma: Appa vs Oppa
I believe Hwa-gun is trapped between her love for her father and her feelings for the crown prince. Since the start of Ruler: Master of the Mask, Hwa-gun’s close relationship with her father was shown. Her father even talked to the Queen after telling him that she wants to be the crown princess.
It is also noteworthy to say that Hwa-gun’s father, though belonging to Pyunsoo-hwe, is not as evil as Master Dae-mok. Oftentimes, he is deemed by the old man as incapable and incompetent in leading the group.
In an earlier episode, Hwa-gun even asked her father if he does not want to be more powerful than Master Dae-mok. Now, I’m really curious if he will play a bigger role in the next episodes.
Hwa-gun’s words definitely piqued my interest. The part where she tells herself that she will never betray Crown Prince Lee Sun again is making me squeeze my neurons out, she’s making it hard for me to think where her loyalty will be as the story progresses. Will Hwa-gun ultimately side with her family or with the crown prince?
The Beautiful and Mysterious Gisaeng
The real identity of the beautiful gisaeng, Mae-chang (Lee Chae-young) is really intriguing, especially after she helped Crown Prince Lee Sun escape the room of Hwa-gun’s father through a secret passage.
She even gave them the map where the copper exchange with Japanese mercants will take place, and played a big role in swaying the naval commander to send his troops for the entrapment of Pyunsoo-hwe. Mae-chang is indeed a mystery we need to uncover.
Adjunct Park is Daebak
Let’s have a moment of silence to honor how daebak (awesome) Adjunct Park Moo-ha (Bae Yoo-ram) was in this scene. He’s acting is so on-point that you would actually feel the pain, angst and guilt he has been carrying since Deputy Magistrate Han’s execution.
I love Ga-eun (Kim So-hyun), but there’s something about Hwa-gun’s affection for the crown prince that makes me feel sorry for her. 😢
Ruler: Master of the Mask is actress Lee Chae-young’s first TV drama in two years after JTBC’s The Maid in 2015.
Lee Chae-young is also known for her sexy charms.
Catch the next episode and let’s try to solve all of our lingering questions.
