Annyeong fellow K-Drama drunkards, we meet again. First off, I’m a bit late with this School 2017 pilot reax since I have three episodes left with Ruler: Master of the Mask. So, bear with me, pretty please?
Despite some negativity surrounding the show, I have high hopes for this drama since I’m basically in love with the School series. Plus, I gave up reviewing Lee Jun-ki oppa’s Criminal Minds, the original is one of my all-time Hollywood series favorites, for this. K-Drama genies, please don’t disappoint me.
Now, let’s do a roll call of our School 2017 main cast.
Ra Eun-ho (Kim Se-jeong) – My spirit animal and the type of student most of us can relate with. She is the kind who is concerned with her school ranking but not too bothered by it. Our main heroine is an aspiring webtoon artist who dreams of entering a prestigious uni to be with her crush.
Hyung Tae-woon (Kim Jung-hyun) – The resident bad boy and handsome rebel who’s out to steal our poor noona hearts. He’s daddy is the director of Geumdo High School so he gets away with what ever he does.
Song Dae-hwi (Jang Dong-yoon) – Think of your high school crush, haha. Kind, handsome, smart, the perfect student body president who everybody adores. He also ranks first in school.
Shim Kang-myung (Han Joo-wan) – Our leads’ homeroom teacher who genuinely looks out for the welfare of the students. I believe he will be the drama’s voice of reason and justice.
Han Soo-ji (Han Sun-hwa) – The pretty police officer who is tasked to investigate the series of pranks “menacing” Geumdo High.
We have a lot of familiar faces in the supporring cast but let’s meet them as the drama unfolds.
Tipsy Playing K-Drama Genie
School 2017’s pilot is an okay start for me. And by okay I mean that I did not end up in snoozeland and will still watch the next episodes.
There’s always a stigma for idols entering the K-Drama world. Kim Se-jeong‘s performance as the optimistic and lovable Ra Eun-ho is way better than what people expect for someone who has no prior acting experience, though I may be biased since she’s my one-pick in Produce 101. But believe me, I’ve seen way, way lacking performance from an acting-dol.
Many stars were discovered through the School series like Kim Woo-bin and Lee Jong-suk, and I’m hoping Kim Jung-hyun can be the next Yook Sung-jae since his character reminds me a bit of Gong Tae-kwang. Also, I adored him in Jealousy Incarnate. I hope School 2017 can be his breakout project.
Out of the cast members shown in School 2017 Episode 1, the one that made an impression on me is Jang Dong-yoon. Something tells me that he will deliver an amazing performance as the series goes on.
I can already pick several scenes where Jang Dong-yoon’s character, Song Dae-hwi, left a mark on me.
Story-wise, School 2017 put a mystery vibe and an investigative twist to the franchise’s plot of South Korea’s competitive and gruelling education system. The drama will revolve around the pressure the students feel with their school rankings, the search for the “prank hero” and how our characters will discover the beauty of friendship.
Omona Moments
I usually fall for the tsundere type of characters but I think Dae-hwi will give me a tough time suffering from second lead syndrome. He made my heart skip a bit with his smile in this scene.
I don’t know about you but I find Eun-ho endearing and funny when she showered Tae-woon with her aegyo.
I expect squeal-worthy moments from these two, keke.
Looks like Dae-whi has a dark past. I look forward to Mr. Perfect and Hot Rebel’s showdown and possible bromance, hehe.
Tipsy Findings
You may or may not be aware of this but our sassy heroine debuted through the first season of idol survival program Produce 101.
She became an instant favorite among the viewers for her all-around talent, good leadership skills and kind personality. She even earned the nickname God Sejeong.
Watch her Produce 101 audition with her fellow Jellyfish trainees and Gugudan members.
And just in case you’re interested, Jellyfish houses VIXX and is the home of Seo In-guk oppa’s sexy lips.
Why do I feel like Dae-hwi and Tae-woon are involved in the pranks? Let’s find out in the next episode. Annyeong!
