K-Drama Reaction: Bride of the Water God | Episode 14

There is always another side to the story.

Bi Ryeom’s Story

I will never look at Bi Ryeom (Gong Myung) the same way again. I thought he was just a happy-go-lucky guardian god but it turns out he is one sensitive deity. He has gone through a lot but he never confided to anyone for hundreds of years. It could be suffocating but he endured. The good side of this is that Moo Ra (Krystal Jung) finally ended they’re pretend game and gave him the best consolation he deserved. These two supporting characters really renewed my interest in the series.

Hoo Ye’s Story

Speaking of interesting, Hoo Ye (Im Joo-hwan) is the most daedal character arc in this series. And thanks to Joo-hwan, Hoo Ye’s inner struggle was so evident in that breakdown scene at the barn. I really can’t hate this villain.

Yoon So-ah’s (Shin Se-kyung) therapy session was also commendable. Her dialogue was written so well it reminded me of all the times I thought the way this series was written was so good. There may be plot-holes here and there but I can’t complain about the words the characters utter.

Ha Baek and So-ah’s Story

image

Ha Baek (Nam Joo-hyuk) and So-ah have experienced the jealousy phase every normal couple go through. Their dynamics in this episode was also impressive. Maybe because it was all romantic scenes which both of them are good at. Give Nam Joo-hyuk a kiss scene and he will pull it off effortlessly but scenes like his confrontation with Bi Ryeom? He needs time to do it well.

Of all the kisses they’ve shared, I think the sunset kiss is my favorite. It happened after So-ah shared a memory of his father to Ha Baek. For a character whose emotional wall is as high as the Great Wall, it is a big step forward for her. Plus the scene was so picturesque!

Maknae’s Episode Verdict

Here I was, bracing myself for one intense episode but it gave me a lighter than expected one. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I actually like they are giving out characters some breathing time before they drop all the conflicts set-up earlier in the plot. One thing I’m hoping is that they’ll utilize every good thing in this series to make one excellent tension-filled episode and not go to another anti-climactic resolution.
