Lee Seung-gi (You’re All Surrounded) has yet to return from his military service, but a casting offer in on the way. Reports stated that the actor is in talks to star in the upcoming fantasy drama Hwayugi, written by the acclaimed duo Hong Sisters (Hong Jung-eun, Hong Mi-ran). No confirmation on the acceptance of the offer has been released yet.
The fantasy drama will be derived from the Chinese classic novel Journey to the West (Seoyugi in Korean), but with a modern twist. Hwayugi revolves around the story of a female monk (heroine) traveling in a pilgrimage with four troublesome characters who are atoning their sins. The role offered to Lee Seung-gi was the mischievous Monkey King Sun Wukong, which Park Bo-gum turned down recently.
Cha Seung-won was earlier offered to play the Bull Demon King Woo Hwi-chul, Sun Wukong’s sworn brother. If both actors sign on, this drama will be their comeback project after You’re All Surrounded, and their reunion with the Hong Sisters.
Hwayugi will be directed by PD Park Hong-kyun (Best Love, Queen Seon-deok) and will air on the Saturday-Sunday slot on tvN in December.
