K-Drama Reaction: Bride of the Water God | Finale

This series had a promising beginning, did it live up to my expectations?

The Water Deity’s Final Mission

Ha Baek (Nam Joo-hyuk) has shown he deserve to be the king of the Realm of God in this finale episode. The haughty and insensitive Water God was suddenly willing to give up his life for the woman who taught him to feel again. I felt somehow guilty of giving up on Joo-hyuk in some episode but he prove me wrong this time. The way he looks so broken while he delivers the bad news to Yoon So-ah (Shin Se-kyung) made me shed some tears.

Hoo Ye (Im Joo-hwan) is one interesting character. I expected him to be extremely evil so I felt relieved that he didn’t go to that path. He deserves a good ending and I’m glad to see him happy with his choices. He looks so peaceful after he told the last part of his story to So-ah. He finally accepted his self, including the powers he didn’t want. I also like he really didn’t push his infatuation to So-ah as I think he knew he wasn’t really in love with her. He just wants someone who would love and accept him. And it turns out, he just had to look at a mirror to who could do that.

So-ah’s Scars

Out of all the character arcs in this series, it was with So-ah I empathize the most. I cried, went crazy, laugh, fell in love, and cried because of So-ah. Her reunion with his father was heartbreaking. Just as her wounds finally start healing, she got scarred again by fate. The series finally gave the emotional punch I was craving for.

Maknae’s Series Verdict

With the lack of tension build-up from previous episodes, I really thought this episode would be an easy-watch. I never expected it would give me a lot of emotions in just over an hour of an episode. Surprisingly, they actually manage to tie up all the loose ends. Although, I have to point out that they seem to hold back a lot in the middle episode only to flood it in this episode. And that what makes me frustrated with this drama at times. I’m vocal on how I actually love the storyline and the characters but the conflicts and resolutions weren’t distributed properly. There was episode which felt like a filler part rather than a progress but there are parts where the drama succeeded on hooking its audience. Its characters are also well thought out and the actors that portray them did a good job on breathing life into them. The writer also created quote-worthy dialogues that really made me think at times. I also have to acknowledge the production’s work on staging a believable Realm of God.

I was just probably expecting a heavier approach to the plot they introduced at the start but if I put that expectation aside, it was actually a fun and entertaining series to watch, just like any other rom-com series. I concede that this drama could have been a lot better but Bride of the Water God has succeeded to be emotionally stirring.
