[MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!]
For someone who has not read the novel, I was really taken aback by this plot twist! I even said Rin became predictable in my past episode reaction. Ottoke, Rin-a???? My hands are still shaking as I type this reaction, so forgive me if this feels raw.
GRUMPY ALLEY
Before we go to this episodes 35 and 36, do me a little favor, will ya? Listen to this very emotional OST, and cry with me.
- SONG-IN’S REVENGE
After the Queen’s death, Crown Prince Wang Won (Im Siwan) is a mess… and the first thing he thought of was to confront the King and his consort Boo-young. Luckily for Won, Boo-young just got a very creepy encounter with Wang Rin (Hong Jong-hyun), and she is fleeing for her life. But she met Won on her way out, slashed her throat with Song-in (Oh Min-suk) watching in secret.
Of course, the evil snake is furious. He compare this event to a chess game, wherein he revealed that he is not really after the mighty Goryeo throne, he is just fond of playing with people. He vows to make Won suffer the pain he is feeling right now.  Ah, I don’t care. Moving on…
- WANG WON’S REVENGE
Where do I start? Rin is such a beautifully written character – a loyal friend, loving brother and caring subject. He has a heart for the people, and I am not ashamed of promoting my RinSan ship, too. He deserves to get the girl because he is the more compassionate one. He has foresight, and he is trustworthy… so trustworthy that he can even risk his life to protect the ones he loved.
My head is about to burst because of Won! From the very start, he is selfish. He never listens and he is single-minded. He only cared about San to the point that he never got the chance to reconcile with his mother before she died. IF ONLY HE OPENED HIS DOOR FOR THE QUEEN THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED.
But what did Won do? He is blinded by hatred and jealousy. He thought Rin abandoned and betrayed him… OF ALL PEOPLE! Up until the last time, he did not even let San speak up. So, Rin let him do what he wanted to do. Rin let Won do the revenge he yearned for, even if this will cost him his life. Until the end, the Queen, San’s father, and Rin all fell in the hole of Won’s wrong decisions. His aggressiveness left him with nothing. He only fell in the trap set by the real enemies. If only he had the time to listen to just one of these dead people. OKAY I KNOW THE CLIFFHANGER DOES NOT CONFIRM RIN IS ALREADY DEAD, but the fact that Won had the nerve to slash his best friend says a lot about his character.
I am so mad right now, but I take this as a good sign. I almost gave up on this show in the previous episode, but this latest episode got me glued back again. I can’t wait for Rin to heal and make Won eat dust. I still love Won, but that is just because Rin still considers him as his friend. The one who committed betrayal here is not Rin or San, it’s Won. He betrayed the trust of everyone who still believed in him. How can you not see the heart of your only loyal childhood friend? Did you ever even considered him precious in the first place? You would rather believe that piece of paper announcing the King’s abdication than the friendship you had all these years?
“Ever since I was young, I was always one step behind. It was not because I was slow. I chose to stay at the back. I liked to watch rather than to act. It made me happy to see you happy. That is why I liked being one step behind.” – Rin
“Despite your situation I must now leave you. I am sorry, dear friend.” – Rin
PS: Can Wang Rin return just like the way Wang Yo came back to life in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo? LOL! No wonder Hong Jong-hyun was all praises to the Wang Rin character. He even said that this character is something that every actor would want to act out.
