FTIsland’s Lee Hong-ki (You’re Beautiful) is the latest Hong Sisters’ project alumnus to consider joining the upcoming fantasy romance Hwayugi. Other actors being considered for the possible reunion drama are Lee Seung-gi (My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho) and Cha Seung-won (Best Love).
Hwayugi will be loosely based from the Chinese classic novel Journey to the West, but with a modern-day Seoul twist. Oh Yeon-seo (My Sassy Girl) was offered the female lead, a monk descendant who has the calling to eliminate the dark spirits lurking in the human world. She will meet then meet the monkey king Sun Wukong, the role offered to Lee Seung-gi, and together they will fight the evil forces.
If he accepts, Lee Hong-ki will play the pig monster Zhu Bajie. According to reports, the pig monster has the power to seduce women while living as a haughty top star.
Cha Seung-won was earlier offered to play the bull demon king Woo Hwi-chul, the drama’s potential villain.
Hwayugi will be directed by PD Park Hong-kyun (Best Love, Queen Seon-deok) and will air on the Saturday-Sunday slot on tvN in December.
