“Don’t cry too much. Don’t beat yourself up for too long. But never forget what happened.”
– Jung Jae-chan, While You Were Sleeping Episode 13
The Ugly Bawl
Is there really a guy out there who will let you use his tie if the tissue box he brought wasn’t enough when you’re crying your eyes out? I don’t think so. Another proof to hate Jung Jae-chan (Lee Jong-suk). I hate him that he is fulfilling romance fantasy like it is his main job. I hate him because he is not as perfect as the usual chaebol male lead but he can still make the female lead swoon. I hate him because he’s setting a standard I know that will be hard to reach. I hate him because I can’t stop liking his character more and more even though I know I’ll end up suffering from separation anxiety. How can Lee Jong-suk pick such characters? He really has a knack for getting good dramas.
On the other hand, Nam Hong-joo (Bae Suzy) is slowly creeping her way into my personal list of K-drama characters that I love. She can act tough all she wants but she still cries like the rest of us. She’s just so relatable.
The Murder of the Queen of Archery
There’s another case for our trio to solve. The gold medalist archer, Yoo Soo-kyung, has been found dead and there is a geometric line on the scene that made it suspicious. Of course, it was ruled as murder and the primary suspect is cable repairman Do Hak-young, which turned out to be an old friend of Han Woo-tak (Jung Hae-in). There are already foreshadowing in place for the upcoming episode but this series has already proved I can’t predict what would happen next. Its non-linear storytelling makes it more exciting to watch.
The Mysterious Good Cop
I was probably blinded by his adorable smiles so I didn’t notice Woo-tak is too good to be true. Something that unsettles me because I thought I’m skilled when it comes to reading fictional characters. I was too busy solving crimes with Hong-joo and Jae-chan I didn’t realize Woo-tak’s backstory hasn’t been told yet. He has a secret no one should know and I’m torn on wanting to know it immediately and not knowing anything at all. I have likened this character too much that it’ll probably hurt to know he’s not really a good cop.
Maknae’s Episode Verdict
The storytelling is what makes this series really good. I was thinking the whole week of why this series is a stand-out when there is already other similar series with the same genre. We already saw similar stories but the way it unfolds is its greatest advantage. It feels like we’re introduced to a new person and we’re slowly getting to know him as we interact with him. They didn’t say they are this or that. We have to decide on how we look at them and their backstories.
Afterthoughts of a Dongsaeng
– Robin, the corgy, is as adorable as his owner.
– Is it wrong to ship Nam Da-reum and Shin Yi-joon the same way I shipped Yoo Jin-goo and Kim So-hyun?
– I sort-of hated Pyo Ye-jin’s character in Fight My Way so I keep on ignoring her but I think her WYWS character, Cha Yeo-jung, would be different.
– Shameless posting of Jung Hae-in’s ripped bod:
– This OST tho!
