K-Drama Reaction: While You Were Sleeping | Episodes 25-26

I NEED TO TYPE MY INTRO ON CAPSLOCK BECAUSE THAT PLOT TWIST IS DAEBAK!

The Serial Murder Case

We have a new case at hand and this time I really think it was fate and not Prosecutor Jung Jae-chan’s (Lee Jong-suk) curious cat nature that led him to it. Well, I have to admit that it was sort-of a combination. This current case might lead him to secrets from the past that that involved they thought were already buried. It might be related to Lee Yoo-beom’s (Lee Sang-yeob) dark days as a prosecutor and to the case of Myung Dae-gu’s (Lee Do-gyeom) father. The infamous lawyer surely did something wrong with that case but, how? and most importantly, why?

I’m not sure if I’m ready for more surprises because it took me some time to recover from this episode’s revelations.

The Prosecutors’ Lives

Nam Hong-joo (Bae Suzy) was assigned to make a special story about the lives of Division 3 prosecutors. Division head Park Dae-young (Lee Ki-young) ordered her to cover Shin Hee-min (Ko Seung-hee) because he thought Hong-joo’s image of the novice Jae-chan would shatter if she saw how Jae-cha works. He was wrong though. He knows nothing about our two main leads. Hee-min may be the model prosecutor; very knowledgeable and prompt. But Jae-chan is a game-changer. He may look like a slob but he does things on his own because he doesn’t what to end up ruining someone’s life just because of little inconvenience. Hong-joo knew this side of him very well. No office messiness will make her undo her liking for this prosecutor.

The Proven Theory

A few episodes ago, Han Woo-tak (Jung Hae-in) offered a hypothesis that he started dreaming about Jae-chan’s future because Jae-chan saved his life. That near-death experience is what causes the visions. As Jae-chan discovered Hong-joo is Chesnut, the baseball-loving kid who save him when they were a child, it gives Woo-tak’s theory more credibility. This lead to Hong-joo and Jae-chan wondering about the police officer they saved years ago. At the start of the episode, I was thinking he was probably a new character they’ll soon introduce. They actually did but I didn’t expect it at all. The older brother of the soldier who killed Jae-chan and Hong-joo’s fathers turned out to be Choi Dam-dong (Kim Won-hae)!

I had no inkling of this plot twist at all. It left me on a fictional high that I can’t shake-off up to the time of this writing. Who would have thought we already knew this mysterious cop since the first episode? I’m excited how Jae-chan would react to this revelation.

Maknae’s Episode Verdict

Grumpy Ahjumma and I were having a discussion last week about the lack of progress to WYWS’s main plot. Other K-dramas with episodic approach used their current cases to make some major progress with the main plot line but not WYWS. So we were looking for such thing last week and the dramagenies might have heard our rants. They dropped a bomb when I wasn’t ready for it. This totally makes up for little to no progress from previous episodes.

Afterthoughts of a Dongsaeng

– I really like the dynamics in Division 3.

– Prosecutor Shin Hee-min is a girl crush.

– So, Woo-tak is really colourblind. I thought he was a serial killer or something but it was his secret. I wonder if his lie would have big consequences in the future? Or is it really the only thing he hides?
