K-Drama Reaction: Hwayugi | Episode 7

This Ma-wang written drama revived my numbing heart! ㅋㅋ

Mirroring Mermaid

Son Oh-gong (Lee Seung-gi) and Jin Sun-mi (Oh Yeon-seo) had to deal with a murdered mermaid ghost as requested by the “second son of the Dragon King of the East Sea” (phew, why do royals have long titles?!). Ma-wang (Cha Seung-won) didn’t really know the true situation until the mermaid already stabbed the human with a thorn that would punish her murderer forever. It did nothing to Ma-wang’s journey to become a deity but it did remind Oh-gong a past scar he probably wanted to forget. So, the Great Sage was apparently betrayed by a human before. This detail sort of justifies Oh-gong’s skepticism. He wasn’t born a cynic. He was betrayed and imprisoned himself behind a wall he created.

Changing Heart

It might be hard for Son Oh-gong to trust anyone but it’s evident Jin Sun-mi is starting creep in into his doubtful heart. He sacrificed getting a good drink to reunite Sun-mi with her halmoni. It might not be a big deal but for someone as egoistic as this Monkey King, it’s a proof of how Sun-mi’s happiness is his happiness. That’s one cheesy line I won’t embarrassed to use because this series is filled with multiple overly romantic lines but still makes your heart thump like crazy. Their chemistry is really ddabong!

Controlling Fate

Ma-wang actually thought he could control destiny. He planned to torment Oh-gong by setting up the reunion of Sun-mi and Jonathan (Michael K. Lee), who turned out to be this drama’s “returning first love.” Sounds a good plan to torture the Geumgonggo-bound demon, right? What he didn’t consider though is how strong Oh-gong feels about Sam Jang. Never did he imagined it will turn into a shocking “best kiss of the year worthy” scene. I have to admit I didn’t see it coming as I was busy figuring out Oh-gong’s past. It wasn’t until I saw his reaction to Sun-mi and Jonathan’s meeting that I was certain he would certainly kiss her.

Maknae’s Episode Verdict

In a drama where every scene shocks you, it’s kind of hard to put your guard down. What seems to be ordinary fairytale-ish stories become a revelation you didn’t expect. And what was supposed to be a comic-filled make-the-male-lead jealous situation becomes a scene that made you stay up at night because of the romantic high it gave you. I probably must brace myself for more attacks like this.

Dongsaeng’s Afterthoughts

– PK is so ship-able with anyone!

– I sympathize with Secretary Lee Han-joo because he always experienced out of this world things.

– Her reaction to their kiss tho ㅋㅋㅋ
