K-Drama Reaction: Hwayugi | Episode 18

Fighting heaven’s plans is not that simple.

The Evil Priestess’ Tears

I could recite hundred ways to punish demonic shaman Ah San-nyeo (Lee Se-young) but this episode reminded me why she became evil. She’s just like the rest of us. She just wanted someone to be her partner but she was betrayed and left alone for 1,200 years.

The things she want is simple: be loved and be taken care of. It seems Jeo Pal-gye (Lee Hong-ki) has some kind of an effect on her. It was not enough to derail her evil plans to destroy the human realm though but it still made her cry. Jeong Se-ra was still in her and even the powerful shapeshifter couldn’t contain the dead girl’s emotion.

The Bull Demon’s Geumganggo

Ma-wang (Cha Seung-won) is in denial mode throughout this episode. He kept on insisting he wouldn’t miss Son Oh-gong (Lee Seung-gi) but he spent the whole episode finding ways to keep the Monkey King safe.

He and Secretary Ma (Lee El) even tried the older version of geumganggo to figure out how Oh-gong will escape his shackles. Turned out they need to do nothing as the peddler herself told Oh-gong he has overcome the mythical bracelet’s powers. If I trust her words, it would seem that Oh-gong has the ability to change what was already planned.

The Summoner’s Vent

Everyone tried to keep Jin Sun-mi (Oh Yeon-seo) in the dark but they forgot she’s a smart and capable woman. She might be weaker than the rest of them but her newfound self-trust has surely empowered her to confront the likes of Ah San-nyeo and Kang Dae-sung (Song Jong-ho).

I also understand why she was frustrated at Oh-gong for dealing with their problems on his own instead of sharing it with her. At least their minor misunderstanding resulted in mind-blowing knee-buckling kiss scenes.

Maknae’s Episode Verdict

Did the dramagenies just give us some “PG bed scene” to satisfy our thirst before they break all of us in the finale? I certainly hope not.

I have to side with Sun-mi on this whole don’t-tell-my-beloved-I’m-a-martyr sequence. It’s frustrating to watch Oh-gong willingly turn himself into a bait (boy, you should trust your woman!). It makes everything dramatic though so I’ll let it pass for the sake of entertainment. Nonetheless, I love seeing how everyone has changed from their insensitive selves to their new versions; they don’t just live for themselves anymore. They now know how to be with another person so it would really be painful if one of them would be gone.

Dongsaeng’s Afterthoughts

– I’m trusting @grumpyahjumma‘s theory that One is Ma-wang’s son. Did you notice how similar their reaction is to the geumganggo?

– We all have that one friend who can’t keep a secret.

– When catching up on your favorite TV series is more important than socializing with humans.

– This is the look you give when someone is flirting with your man.

– What a concept.

– Same, girl, same

– Would anyone disagree that Oh-gong and Sun-mi’s kisses should win an award?
