It’s 2018, the year where K becomes a very famous K-pop idol with legions of fans. It’s been years since he started his singing career at Kirin Arts High School, a far cry from his humble beginnings as a country bumpkin. As part of @ahjummamshies‘ anniversary special, Grumpy Flashback will reminisce K’s journey to stardom in the popular youth drama Dream High.
This precious little beehive was our version of a perfect high school drama – not as flashy as Boys Over Flowers and not as boring (oops, sorry) as The Heirs. And of course, you have miss A’s Bae Suzy, Kim Soo-hyun, IU, T-ara’s Ham Eun-jung, and 2PM’s Ok Taec-yeon and Jang Woo-young as main leads. What more could you ask for?
The drama revolved around the lives of high school students who all shared one dream: make it big in the entertainment industry. They entered the country’s premiere school for idol hopefuls, Kirin Arts High School. Our the heroine, Go Hye-mi (Bae Suzy), originally wanted to become a classical singer and was even poised to enter Julliard, but was forced to audition in Kirin and to pay off her father’s debt to a gangster.
This never gets old. Back then, these cuties were just rookies who wanted to make a name of their own. Now, they are known as some of Korea’s biggest celebrities. You did well, guys! 😭
Third-rate best friend Baek-hee
Eun Baek-hee (Ham Eun-jung) was Hye-mi’s best friend-turned-enemy. Hye-mi initially looked down on her friend, but Baek-hee took off and made her professional debut before her.
Find a man who would draw a comic strip with you as the heroine.
Dream High also had a memorable case of second lead syndrome as everyone taught Hye-mi would end up with Jin-guk (Taecyeon). Although Hye-mi liked Jin-guk first, Sam-dong (Kim Soo-hyun) was persistent in wooing her. Because of Jin-guk’s hesitations and wrong decisions, he lost Hye-mi to Sam-dong. Let’s also not forget that Jin-guk chose his career (or debut in an idol group) than love.
While Jin-guk rose to stardom, Hye-mi and Sam-dong grew closer to each other. Sam-dong has always been very vocal about his admiration for Hye-mi. He even told his mom that Hye-mi was head-over-heels for him! Hahaha
Breakfast like a queen, lunch like a princess, dinner like a pauper.
But my favorite couple in Dream High has got to be Jason (Jang Woo-young) and Pil-sook (IU). I was annoyed at first when Jason declined Pil-sook’s love confession, especially when Pil-sook makes a pact with Jason that after 200 days, if she loses weight successfully, Jason will give her a new answer. Like why would you insist yourself on someone who doesn’t like you just the way you are? But then as the story goes, we were all proven wrong when Jason proved that he liked Pil-sook even before her weight loss!
No woman is ugly. It’s just that some women are lazy. All you need to do is become more diligent.
Also, one of the strengths of this drama was JYP himself. Don’t you think so, too?
Don’t get anxious that things are taking longer for you. People who take their time getting to their dreams can see and experience more.

My favorite thing about this drama was how a simple amulet was used as a symbol of overcoming the student’s hardships one by one. Hye-mi, Jin-guk and Sam-dong never believed in Baek-hee’s amulet at first. Hye-mi even call a person with amulets not talented at all. I liked how this little piece of ornament not just helped them in their challenges but also acted as a symbol of their renewed friendship.
