In Spotlight: Lee Sung-kyung Filmography

Do you like Messi? I’m not sure. But I definitely like Lee Sung-kyung! For K-Drama lovers who first saw her in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo, she’s undoubtedly adorable and cute, but do you know that she started in roles that we (love to) hate. Here’s model turned actress, Lee Sung-kyung.

Lee Sung-kyung’s first ever drama appearance was in 2014 SBS drama It’s Okay It’s Love where she played a school drop-out abandoned by her mother. She takes advantage of her co-worker Soo-kwang (Lee Kwang-soo)’s feelings and uses him to give her money and buy her things. Not that lovable right?

Lee Sung-kyung immediately followed It’s Okay, It’s Love with another drama, this time a family series on MBC titled Queen’s Flower. She plays Kang Yi-sol, a woman abandoned by her mother for success.

The year 2016 was so far the busiest year for Lee Sung-kyung because she worked in three dramas in just a single year. The first one was webtoon adaptation Cheese in the Trap where she starred as uber materialistic woman Baek In-ha. Many criticized her acting with some saying she went too far with her interpretation and that she’s exaggerated. Personally, I guess she played it perfectly. She’s ought to irritate us right?

And if you don’t dislike her yet, Lee Sung-kyung played another villainous role in SBS’s Doctors. She played Park Shin-hye’s friend turned enemy because of (you know) love interests, Hong Ji-hong (Kim Rae-won) and Jung Yoon-do (Yoon Kyun-sang).

But it’s not until Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo that we all fell in love with Lee Sung-kyung (and Nam Joo-hyuk, for sure) as she played a cute aspiring weightlifter named Kim Bok-joo. The series brings back a lot of ‘adolescent days’ memories to viewers as we watched Bok-joo experienced her first love, first heartbreak and how she worked hard to chase after her dreams. Lee Sung-kyung sacrificed her slim figure and put on extra weight to portray the role. Now, that’s what you call COMMITMENT!

May 2018, she starred in the film Love+Sling as Ga-Young alongside Yu Hae-Jin, Kim Min-Jae, Sung Dong-Il, and Na Moon-Hee.

In the same month and year, About Time premiered where she act as musical actress Choi Michaela.

In 2019, she topbilled another movie project. This time with Ra Mi-ran in Miss and Mrs. Cops. She played the role of rookie detective Ji-hye.
