Gong Yoo (Goblin), Bae Doo-na (Stranger 2), and Lee Joon (My Father is Strange) are now all confirmed as the lead stars in the upcoming Netflix original series “The Silent Sea” (also called “The Sea of Tranquility”).
The drama is based on the 2014 short film “The Silent Sea” by director Choi Hang-yong, who will also direct the series. The Netflix version will be produced by Jung Woo-sung and written by Park Eun-gyo (Mother).
The Silent Sea is a dystopian series set in the future when planet Earth suffers from severe food and water shortage due to desertification. Netflix describes it as a “mystery sci-fi thriller that follows the story of elite scientists who set off for the moon to retrieve some unknown samples from an abandoned research station.”
The three main cast members will comprise the special team. Gong Yoo will appear as the team leader Han Yoo-jae while Bae Doo-na joins him as the astrobiologist Song Ji-an. Both have different reasons for agreeing to the team. Bae Doo-na aims to dig deeper into the accident that happened in the research station while Gong Yoo’s mission is to retrieve the said mysterious samples.
Making his drama comeback following his military discharge, Lee Joon will play the army captain Ryu Tae-seok, who volunteers to join Gong Yoo’s special mission to travel to the moon.
The Silent Sea will stream exclusively on Netflix, but the broadcast date has yet to be announced.
