In Spotlight: Song Joong-ki Filmography

With the recent success of his comeback drama Vincenzo, Song Joong-ki has been making our hearts race once again. But this global star is not just all about looks and talent. He excelled in high school and even gained admission to Sungkyunkwan University. He was then scouted on the subway while staying in Seoul for his entrance test preparations. He balanced college life as a Business Administration student and acting, even though his father was against it. All was worth it, though, because Song Joong-ki not just graduated college, he also gained the love of fans from all over the world through his hit projects.

Aside from appearing in numerous dramas and movies over the years, he also starred in different reality programs and variety shows such as SBS’ Running Man and jTBC’s Made in U. He also released the a health and beauty book guide for men titled Beautiful Skin Project.

Get Karl! Oh Soo-jung (SBS / 2007) – reporter

He had an unnamed appearance in the SBS romantic comedy series Get Karl! Oh Soo-jung.

A Frozen Flower (2008) – No-tak

Song Joong-ki made his official acting debut via the period movie A Frozen Flower which was topbilled by his close friends Jo In-sung and Song Ji-hyo.

My Precious Child (KBS2 / 2008-2009) – Jang Jin-ho

In 2008, he became one of the main cast of the KBS drama My Precious Child.

Triple (MBC / 2009) – Ji Poong-ho

He replaced Jung Il-woo for the role of short-track speed skater Ji Poong-ho in the 2009 MBC drama Triple. Did you know that he used to be a real-life short-track speed skater and even represented Daejeon at a national competition? Too bad, he got injured during first year in high school and gave up the sport!

My Fair Lady (KBS2 / 2009) – handsome butler (cameo)

He had a special appearance as Yoon Eun-hye’s new personal attendant/secretary in the drama My Fair Lady. He would have been an eye candy for a secretary but he got fired on his first day!

Five Senses of Eros (2009) – Yoo Jae-hyuk (segment “Believe in the Moment”)

Song Joong-ki appeared in the movie Five Sense of Eros: Believe in the Moment as Yu Jae-hyuk, a student who’s in a relationship with Shin Se-kyung, but exchanged partners with two other couples.

Where the Truth Lies (2009) -Jo Jong-pil (murder victim)

He played the true-to-life story of Hongik college student Jo Jung-pil, whose high profile death sparked a national investigation.

Will It Snow For Christmas? (SBS / 2009) – Han Ji-yong

He played as Han Ye-seul’s older brother in the melodrama Will It Snow For Christmas?

Obstetrics and Gynecology Doctors (SBS / 2010) – Ahn Kyung-woo

He had a supporting role in the medical drama OB-GYN as the second year resident Kyung-woo.

Sungkyunkwan Scandal (KBS2 / 2010) – Ku Yong-ha

He hit the jackpot by playing the indolent playboy Yong-ha in the hit historical drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal. This drama gave his popularity a boost, thanks to his bromance with Yoo Ah-in.

Hearty Paws 2 (2010) – Dong-wook

A sequel to Hearty Paws, Song Joong-ki played the role of high schooler Dong-wook, who rescues his Labrador pups against two jewelry thieves.

Tree With Deep Roots (SBS / 2011) – Lee Do (young)

He earned praises from critics for playing the young King Sejong in Tree With Deep Roots.

Penny Pinchers (2011) – Ji-woong

In 2011, he starred as an unemployed loafer in the romantic comedy movie Penny Pinchers.

The Innocent Man (KBS2 / 2012) – Kang Ma-roo

2012 was a great year for him as his popularity had gone up immensely. He bagged his first leading man role for the highly-rated KBS drama Innocent Man opposite Moon Chae-won.

The Grand Heist (2012) – Jung Yak-yong (cameo)

He had a cameo in the 2012 historical comedy film The Grand Heist, led by his close friend Cha Tae-hyun.

A Werewolf Boy (2012) – Chul-soo (wolf-boy)

Continuing the good streak in that year, he was cast for the titular role of the wolf-boy Chul-soo in the film A Werewolf Boy, which became the most successful Korean melodrama of all time.

Descendants of the Sun (KBS2 / 2016) – Yoo Shi-jin

His comeback drama after his military discharge was in the global hit Descendants of the Sun, where he played as the military soldier Yoo Shi-jin. He starred alongside actress Song Hye-kyo, now his former wife. The drama was a massive hit, which peaked at 41.6% in ratings locally and gained international success.

The Battleship Island (2017) – Park Moo-young

He then appeared in the period action movie The Battleship Island as a member of the Korean independence movement who infiltrated the Hashima Island to rescue an abducted colleague.

The Sound of Your Heart (KBS2-Naver TV-Netflix) / 2016-2017) – webtoon writer (cameo)

He supported his good friend Lee Kwang-soo by making a special appearance as a webtoon writer for the comedy series The Sound of Your Heart.

Man to Man (JTBC-Netflix / 2017) – bank teller (ep.9)

He also showed his support to Man to Man writer Kim Eun-sook and PD Lee Chung-min by appearing in a cameo as a bank teller.

Arthdal Chronicles (tvN / 2019) – Eun-sum / Sa-ya

He reunited with his Descendants of the Sun co-star Kim Ji-won in the 2019 fantasy drama Arthdal Chronicles.

Space Sweepers (2021) – Tae-ho

He became one of the leads of the Netflix sci-fi movie Space Sweepers as Kim Tae-ho, a former Commander of the Space Guards.

Vincenzo (tvN / 2021) – Vincenzo Cassano

In 2021, he graced the small screen once more as the titular character Vincenzo, an Italian Mafia consigliere of Korean descent.
