K-Drama Reaction: While You Were Sleeping | Episodes 15-16

One of the hardest things to fight is people’s prejudices.

The Death of the Queen of Archery

This case didn’t turn out as I expected it to be. Heck, it wasn’t even a murder. Yoo Soo-kyung died by accident but because of unexplained circumstances, people, I included, thought she was killed. They can’t accept the nation’s hero didn’t die a tragic death and keep on insisting it wasn’t just because of an unfortunate accident. And our beloved characters are caught at the center of it. Jung Jae-chan (Lee Jong-suk) has to prove the innocence of a man everyone thought was a murderer. It wouldn’t be easy but I’m sure Nam Hong-joo (Bae Suzy) and Han Woo-tak (Jung Hae-in) would be there to help him out. Fighting deja vu trio!

Lessons From The Past

If it wasn’t because of Jae-chan and Hong-joo’s past (and cruel) experiences, then they would be like the rest of us; quick to jump to conclusion. But they have been through a lot that they are careful when passing judgement on others. Jae-chan and Hong-joo have a shared past they’re still unaware of. They didn’t know about it and yet it is the same thing that helped them be a better person on dealing with such complicated matters.

Conflict of Interest

Speaking of complicated things, I think this case wouldn’t be as hard as it seems to be if not for Woo-tak’s personal relationship with the accused. I couldn’t believe him at first but his statement made sense. And Jae-chan has to trust him and the truth he was offering. Also, if Lee Yoo-beom is not as a manipulative lawyer as he was, this case wouldn’t be sensationalized as Hong-joo already decided Do Hak-young’s past is irrelevant to the case. Yoo-beom (aka the lawyer I hate the most) wants a trial by the media and a public witch hunt. He should have a good backstory because my tiny feeling of empathy towards him is slowly vanishing.

Can I also point out the “breakfast trial” scene where Woo-tak denied he likes Hong-joo? Jae-chan knew he was lying. It would be hard for me to see Hong-joo and Jae-chan happy if uri Woo-tak would be sad.

Maknae’s Episode Verdict

There are only two possible reasons why I could get a migrane after watching a K-drama. (1) It has makjang plot that makes it hard for me to watch. (2) It has extremely well-written complicated plot I can’t wrap my head around it. It’s the latter in While You Were Sleeping‘s case. I have some theories about what would happen but it kept on surprising me and making me feel like a novice K-drama viewer. Can I get the next episode in advance please? Because I can’t wait to see how this case would be solved.

Afterthoughts of a Dongsaeng

– I’m starting to like the rest of he prosecutors.

– Woo-tak’s backstory has been put aside to make way for the case. But I’m dying with curiosity about his past.

– This is me while watching Hong-joo and Jae-chan’s lovey-dovey scenes.
