Lee Byung-hun is Mr. Sunshine

After many speculations on who will headline hitmaker Kim Eun-sook’s newest drama, Mr. Sunshine, it’s now been confirmed that it’s no other than Korean Hollywood actor Lee Byung-hun (Master, G.I. Joe). This will mark his return to the small screen with IRIS as his last drama which was years ago.

Mr. Sunshine revolves around the story of a boy from Joseon, who will be played by Lee Byung-hun, who boards an American warship and goes to America during the US expedition to Joseon in 1871. He then returns to his home country as an American soldier stationed in the country.

I actually have mixed feelings about this casting news. Lee Byung-hun is not the conventionally handsome type unlike those actors in the writer’s previous dramas like Song Joong-ki, Gong Yoo and Lee Min-ho so I’m not sure if this will have the same appeal especially to the younger demographic. However, he is one of Korea’s top notch actors and was actually one of the first leading men to capture the hearts of Korean women in early 2000.

No leading lady has been named but I’m pretty sure she’ll be someone in Lee Byung-hun’s league. Son Ye-jin perhaps?

No broadcaster has been attached to the period drama but it’s expected to air next year.
